Gymboree, Corp. Recalls Children's Toy Swords Due to Propensity for Breakage and Laceration

On October 18, 2007, the Gymboree Corporation of San Francisco, California, in conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, issued a voluntary recall of Toy Pirate Swords, which were manufactured in China. The swords can break, creating a sharp point, which can result in a child cutting him/herself or others.

Of the 6000 Toy Pirate Swords that were manufactured, Gymboree Corporation has received reports of 11 swords breaking although no injuries have been reported to date. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the Toy Pirate Swords unless otherwise instructed.

The specifications of the Toy Pirate Sword being recalled has the following SKU number: 140025491-GYS049. The SKU number is printed on the price tag above the bar code. The sword is made of plastic, and has a gold-colored handle and a gray plastic blade. The sword is about 19 inches longm and was sold at national Gymboree stores nationwide and on its web site from August 2007 through September 2007, at a cost of between $12 and $15.

The swords can be returned to any Gymboree store for a full refund. Consumers also can contact Gymboree to receive instructions on returning the swords via mail. For additional information, Gymboree can be contacted toll-free at (877) 449-6932 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. PT Monday through Friday and between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. PT Saturday.
