The Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety recall on certain cans of hot dog chili due to botulism. This was the first incident of botulism being discovered in commerically canned products in decades.

Botulism is a bacteria that can cause muscle paralysis. Eventually, paralysis can cause a person to stop breathing and die, unless supported by a ventilator. Most victims eventually recover after weeks to months of care. As of this date, four (4) individuals had been hospitalized but all were expected to survive.

The defective products were made by the Castleberry Food Co., which is owned by Bumble Bee Seafoods LLC, which is based in San Diego, Georgia. The canned chili that was affected by the recall was manufactured and canned by Castleberry Food Co. in Augusta, Georgia.

Those products that are affected and subject to the recall are as follows:
Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030000101);
Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030099533); and
Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 1111083942).

Consumers with questions or concerns can call the company free of charge at 888-203-8446.
