Family Awarded $1.5 Million In Fraternity Hazing Death of Son

In 2003, a student who pledged Psi Epsilon Chi fraternity died of water intoxication at the hands of fourteen fraternity members during a hazing incident. Eleven of the students pleaded guilty to the death of the student. The family brought a claim for wrongful death against all fourteen members of the fraterinity including John Burnius, one of the convicted tormentors. The New York State Supreme Court ordered Burnius to pay to pay 400,000 dollars in damages and another 100,000 for wrongful death. He must also pay one million in punitive damages.
